Slipped disc or herniated disc is a condition that occurs when the gel-like center of spinal disc ruptures through a weak area in the outer wall called the annulus. It is most common in the lower back (lumbar spine), though it can also occur in the neck (cervical spine). Symptoms include pain in the lower back as well as leg pain (sciatica). Even though a slipped disc can be extremely painful, symptoms are usually short-lived. Practicing some simple physiotherapyexercises and giving proper rest to the lower back can bring relief.
The first step towards recovery involves giving proper rest to the body and limiting activity for a few days.
The first step to slipped disc recovery includes non-surgical treatment such as mild pain medication, adequate rest, herniated disc exercises, hydrotherapy and pain management.
About 80% of the people experience a reduction in their symptoms within four to six weeks and return to normal activity after getting proper slipped disc treatment at home and trying some simple home remedies.
If pain persists, it is best to consult a doctor who can recommend non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to help relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Muscle relaxants can also be used in case of muscle spasms but they must be prescribed by a doctor.
