Physiotherapy For Knee Pain Management

Osteoarthritis of the knee joint is one of the leading causes of knee pain. Patients feel pain or stiffness in the joints and experience reduced function due to degeneration of the cartilage. Physiotherapists assess patients suffering from chronic or age-related knee pain and then plan treatment accordingly, focussed upon improving flexibility, reducing pain, improving strength and weight management that helps in enhancing the quality of life.

If you have one or more of the knee pain symptoms given below, then it is time to consult a doctor.

Swelling and stiffness in the joints
Constant pain
Sharp, shooting pain when the knee is in use
Popping or crunching noises while sitting or getting up
Inability to straighten, bend or flex the knees
Weakness or instability in the knees
Deformity around the joints
Knee pain that occurs at night or while resting
Knee pain that persists beyond a few days

Any other unusual symptom that is making it difficult to walk, bend or do any other physical activity

Knee pain causes

Knee pain can be localized to a specific area or be diffused throughout the knee, depending upon the severity of damage caused to the knee joint. Even though the reasons for knee pain may vary, the result is always the same- mild to extreme pain and discomfort in the knee area. Some common causes of knee pain include:

Degenerating bones
Age-related issues
Injury due to an accident
Dislocation & Fracture
Underlying infection

Types of knee pain

Acute knee pain

Mainly occurs due to external factors like twisting, strain due to overextension of the muscles and ruptured or torn muscle tendons. The pain in such cases occurs often immediately. The patient can opt for painkillers for immediate pain relief and gradually move to other forms of pain management like physiotherapy, massages, acupuncture, etc.

Chronic knee pain

It is a form of pain that is caused by degeneration or inflammation of the joint. The pain in such cases develops continuously and its intensity increases over a passage of time. While physiotherapy is a great way to manage pain and to prevent further damage to the knee joint, but in a few cases, where the pain refuses to subside, knee replacement surgery might be recommended.

Types of knee injuries

Any form of trauma or injury to the knee can cause serious damage to the bones, ligaments, tendons and fluid that make up the entire knee joint. As a result, one might experience moderate to extreme pain in the area and require immediate medical attention to ascertain the cause as well as the course of treatment for healing and recovery purposes. Knee injuries can range from fractures to a torn meniscus (rubbery cartilage that gets torn as a result of the heavy lifting of weight) and from knee bursitis (inflammation of the joints) to patellar tendonitis (injury caused when the tendon is overstressed).

Knee pain treatment >>Some of the most commonly known treatments include:

It helps in restoring the normal functioning of the knee by strengthening the muscles and facilitating mobility.

Pain relievers and other analgesics are often recommended to manage pain and provide instant relief to the patient.

In case of chronic knee pain or severe wear and tear of the joints, knee replacement or knee correction surgeries are recommended.

Corticosteroids injections are administered to help in knee inflammation. Other injections administered for knee pain include – hyaluronic acid supplements and arthrocentesis.

Physiotherapy for knee pain

The course of treatment for knee pain totally depends upon the severity of the damage done to the knee and the final diagnosis. Physiotherapy is aimed at providing maximum flexibility and mobility to the knee joints. In addition to this, it also helps in managing knee pain, strengthening the muscles around the knee joints, reversing the damage and preventing further episodes of pain and injury.

Physiotherapy helps in pain relief for people suffering from cervical spondylosis, frozen shoulder, paralysis, numbness in limbs, knee or back pain, muscular or tissue injury and post-operative rehabilitation.
Depending upon the severity of the problem, physiotherapy is administered for cervical spondylosis, pulmonary or other chronic lung diseases, paralysis, arthritis, sports injuries etc.
The duration of any physiotherapy treatment varies from patient to patient. It depends upon the severity of the problem and body’s response to the therapy being administered. In case of a sports injury, the treatment can go on for four-six months or even more whereas a regular back pain may range between three to four months to heal.
Physiotherapy helps in restoring the sensation in the limbs affected by paralysis. Although this treatment takes time but manual therapy supported by advanced equipment promotes quicker recovery from paralysis.
