Luscious chocolates, tangy & fizzy soft drinks, smoking etc. Not too easy to give up. Are they? At the same time, they not only trigger major health concerns, but have a very bad effect on our teeth. Let us look at some simple tips and tricks, to keep our pearly whites shiny and maintain good dental hygiene.

Maintaining regular dental hygiene

Starting with the basics. It is important to understand that prevention from the beginning and refraining from a few (bad) habits go a long way to give healthy teeth.

Brush & mouthwash

Use a soft bristled toothbrush, and dedicate a minimum of 2 minutes to thoroughly brush your teeth. Make sure you reach all the way to the back, the insides, and the upper jaw. Gentle circular motions on all surfaces helps get rid of any stuck food particles. This is essential to prevent buildup between gaps, which serve as a breeding ground for bacteria.

Make sure you use a toothpaste containing flouride

Tip 1: Don’t rinse your mouth immediately after brushing. This prevents the flouride in the toothpaste from working on your teeth, due to dilution.

Tip 2: Do not use mouthwash immediately after brushing. Use it after meals or just before heading out to a party for super fresh breath! When purchasing, pick an alcohol – free mouthwash that doesn’t contain chlorine dioxide.


Incorporate alkaline foods to your diet

Pile on the fruits and veggies! High alkaline-foods neutralize the damage to the teeth through consumption of acidic foods. Fruits and vegetables with pH above 7, are thus not just great for your overall health, but also do wonders to your oral health and dental hygiene. Get munching!

Calcium+ Vitamin D+

Include dairy products in your diet to have the requisite dose of calcium and vitamin D. You can also go for supplements, in case of lactose intolerance.


Limit sugary and acidic foods

Sugar and acidic foods are notorious for corroding the tooth enamel. We understand it’s hard to stay away from cravings but they put your beautiful smile at stake!


No cigarettes and tobacco

Your lungs will thank you for this. And so will your teeth! Smoking doubles the risk of gum disease and makes treatment, later, that much more difficult. Stained teeth, bad breath and a weakened sense of taste are just a few of the adverse effects of chewing tobacco.

A visit to the dentist every 6 months is the best way to ensure excellent dental hygiene. Don’t miss an appointment, this can even help you get out of office early!


Remedies for sensitive teeth

Everyday things lying around in the kitchen can be very beneficial if you have sensitive teeth. If (too hot or too cold) food items like hot tea, or ice cream give painful sensations to your teeth, it’s time to ransack your kitchen cupboards!


Salt Water

Add a tsp of salt to a glass of warm water. Use it to rinse your mouth well. This helps relieve toothache fast and promotes better gum health. Once again, it makes the pH of your mouth alkaline which inhibits the growth of bacteria.


This is a crazy germ killer with its excellent antibacterial properties! Crush a couple of garlic pods, and make it into a paste with a pinch of salt and few water drops. Place the mixture on the sensitive areas and let it rest for a while. Rinse using warm salt water solution (in the previous tip).


This is one of oldest remedies we’ve heard of since childhood. The easiest way is to place a piece or two of cloves between your teeth & let the juices gradually seep in. Another way is to use clove oil. Remember that it is very concentrated, so use a cotton swab and put a couple of drops to it. Place the swab on the affected teeth, and let it rest for about half an hour.

Remedies for plaque

Plaque build-up is one of the most stubborn tooth problems one can come across. The yellow stony accumulation is not just unsightly, but can lead to bigger dental problems. Follow these simple tips to naturally remove these at home.

Oil pulling

This technique is so simple, you can use it while doing absolutely anything. Take a tablespoon of coconut, sunflower or sesame oil and swirl it around in your mouth for 15 minutes. After that, spit it out and rinse your mouth with warm water. That’s it! The oil reacts with the plaque, dissolving it. Be sure to spit the oil in a trash can, else you may risk clogging pipes.

 Orange Peel

Take some orange peel and directly rub it on your teeth for 2-3 minutes. Let the juices rest and then rinse your mouth. You may also mash up the peel and apply the paste for a couple of minutes. Rinse it off! This works doubly well against tartar and helps to whiten teeth too.


These home remedies may take a while to work, but they are effective in the long run and very simple to use. Give them a shot and keep your teeth healthy and happy!
