A painful health condition, carpal tunnel syndrome signifies the compression of the median nerve as it passes through the hand. Located on the palm side of a human hand, the median nerve provides sensation to the thumb, index finger, long finger, and part of the ring finger.
Swelling inside the wrist causes the compression in carpal tunnel syndrome. It can lead to numbness, weakness, and tingling on the side of your hand near the thumb. Let’s learn some quick exercises recommended by physiotherapists that can provide relief from this health condition.
1. Forearm Stretch
Start by sitting upright in a chair, and position yourself so your upper body is directly over your seat and your spine is in neutral position. Extend both arms directly in front of your body and keeping your palms facing down, turn your fingers toward the walls on either side of you until you feel a gentle stretch along the inside of your forearms. Hold 5 to 10 seconds.
2. Wrist Extension
When you are in a seated or standing position, stretch one arm in front of your body at shoulder level with your fingers pointing upward, then grasp your fingertips with the opposite hand and gently pull them toward your body until you feel a stretch under your wrist. Hold 20 to 30 seconds, then change sides.
3. Finger Flexion and Extension
Start by sitting upright in a chair, and keep your spine is in neutral position. Extend both arms directly in front of you and, keeping your palms facing down, flex your fingers inward to create a “claw,” then spread your fingers as far apart as you can. Repeat 5 to 10 times every 30 minutes while doing computer or desk work.
If the patient performs these exercises regularly, he/ she can get long-term relief from this condition. For complete recovery, a consultation with physiotherapists is recommended.
